Madrid Tourism

This is a city that is always on the go, with events every day of the week, such as the large and varied Sunday markets. The Rastro is amongst the largest flea markets in the world and a good one to start with, as it's easy to find - beginning beside the impressive Cathedral of San Isidro. Scattered around the rest of the city are bustling fairs like the one at the Plaza Mayor, which specialises in an extensive range of collectable items.

If you're not intending on buying, the venue itself is still worth a look for its Renaissance style architecture and fascinating history as a centre for both festivals and carnivals. Another stunning building is the Royal Palace (Palacio Real). Its magnificent facade is a favourite place to take some holiday snaps, but its stunning interiors, courtyards and formal gardens are also open to the public and make for a memorable visit.

Any description of this city wouldn't be complete without a mention to its most famous of cultural pursuits - bullfighting. Adored and derided in equal measure, this is nevertheless the home of the sport. It cannot be denied that a day out in one of the immense bullrings, that seat up to 32,000 spectators, is an exhilarating experience. One facet to the city that everyone will enjoy however, is its excellent public transport system, with an efficient metro service that takes you to all of the top sites!
