There're over 150 sandy beaches here. Also 3,000 hours of sunshine every year and the Canary's longest beach at a sumptuous 4 miles. It also has a unique landscape of rolling sand dunes. This is down in no small part to its closeness to both Africa (60 miles) and the Sahara Desert (125 miles). The results are spectacular vistas like those found at the Corralejo Dunes National Park.
If you love your water sports then you will love this island in the Canaries. Favoured past times here include taking advantage of the great waves on offer. Young backpackers here have been know to say "There is a whole lot of surfing and diving going on!" During the summer, the North-Easterly trade winds that Columbus used to discover the Americas, make for a wind-surfers dream all year round. The conditions are so perfect that the PWA world windsurfing and slalom event is held here every July. It's a great place for a range of other water sports on both amateur and professional levels. Much of the island's beauty lies beneath its turquoise seas and the coast is also perfect for diving.
There's a diverse tapestry of history here. Much of it is clear to the eye when you look. The effects of distant pirate raids still evident in the ruins within the central towns of Antigua and Tuineje. Other sites are less obvious and require a little more adventuring. Such as the religious symbols and engravings that can be found on Mount Tindaya. 4x4 tours are available here, as are mountain bikes for hire and guided motorbike tours too.
