The city is the hub of business and commerce in the Basque region - 6th largest in Spain and many visit for conventions, meetings and exhibitions. The gastronomy here is extremely good - wonderful Basque dishes and the favourites for lunch-time are the Basque Tapas which come on lightly toasted pieces of bread and have various toppings - the meats, salamis and gambas are particularly tasty.
Shopping is fairly varied but the trademark of the city is the Beret and there are various other styles of hats to be chosen here - Bassandere on Calle Iparraguirre is the spot for this kind of purchase - found near the Guggenheim Museum.
There are three main museums of interest in the city - the most famous - Guggenheim which houses masterpieces from some of the greats in the art world including Antoni Tapies, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Motherwell and the great Picasso. Museo Vasco is the place to visit for Ethnology, History and Archaeology whilst the Museo de Bellas Artes is the place for those Goya and El Greco masterpieces.
