In the Plaza de Catalunya with its fountains, pigeons and marbled tile work you are at the gateway of Las Ramblas - famous tree lined avenue where you will find everything from gold, silver, diamonds, jewels, the latest in fashion, tapas with an unusually Basque presence, cool drinks served in the seating areas and flowers, birds and other glorious gifts strewn all the way down to the port area. The Gothic Quarter can be found about half way down where the Cathedral, Bishops Palace, Kings Plaza and many other historical buildings can be viewed, photographed and admired. Clariana Padellas Palace is the home of the City History Museum and can be found just behind the King's Plaza.
Once you have explored the port area where you will see Christopher Columbus' statue, the boardwalk to exhibition centres including Emax Virtual Reality Cinema, Barceloneta - a village feel with its own identity with choices of cafes, bars and shops all looking out to sea and where you can simply sip coffee and watch the world go by. Why not take the tube up to Sagrada Familia and see the famous Cathedral designed by Gaudi and that he estimated would take 200 years to build in total - climb the 200 or more steps to the top of one of the steeples and enjoy fabulous and well deserved views of this beautiful city.
