Cordoba still retains much of the architecture that once made it the cultural centre of Europe. Its 10th-century zenith under Arab rule led to the construction of such masterpieces as the Mezquita Mosque - the third largest mosque in the world and the grandest ever attempted in Spain. Today it shares a skyline with such buildings as the Renaissance cathedral and Alcazar de los Cristianos, creating vistas reminiscent of both the east and the Occident.

At ground level, the city is a maze of narrow, winding streets that twist around the whitewashed houses before giving way to flower-laden patios (and their annual competition for the Most Beautiful Courtyard award). Ancient city walls still enclose the old Jewish Quarter and there's a huge catalogue of attractions to visit in the old town. Amongst them are the Fine Arts Museum, with its collection of medieval Andalusian paintings; Viana Palace, now also home to a museum of its own; and the 1st-century ruins of the Templo Romano.

Cordoba Travel Guide

Modern Cordoba is also well worth exploring, with its wealth of fashion boutiques, large department stores, outdoor cafes and bustling downtown flea market. The city has its own airport and is reachable via the E05 from Andalusian capital Seville - another of the Guadalquivir River's age-old ports. There is a region of Andalucia that is called the same as this wonderful town.

With a small population of about 200k it does seem that they know how to entertain the tourist that is for sure. This splendid town is a holiday and a half in a compact but culturally and historically wide reaching area. Much to see and do and so little time you will find to do it in. The cathedral here is right in the middle of the quaint old town. Hotels are available with views of it magnificent walls from your window. The restaurants and tapas bars here range from good to absolutely splendid and there are even a few popular named brands in the area for you if you are not so into eating the glorious local foods. now you know you want to go try our online booking service for hotels in Cordoba Spain.
